Sure.

Yes, but you 

1) loose some accuracy
2) are subjected to the classical CFL stability condition on your time
step
3) have constraints on the quality of your mesh ("no flat elements") to
have a stable scheme

It would be nice to implement such a lumping in getdp, though.
Unfortunately I do not have the time to do it myself. Would you be
interested?
