[Gmsh] About Scaling

Hi !
I have noticed that GMSH doesn't have the same comportment if I want to 
mesh a big domain or a small one. I have created a domain to mesh, and I 
scaled it up and down (scaling the dimensions of the box AND the 
characteristic lengths).
For a box (40,20,3) (Scale factor = 1) I obtain about 202 000 elements,
SCALING UP : scale factor 3 -> 423 000, scale factor 4 -> 1 033 000
SCALING DOWN : scale factor 0.1 -> 253 000, scale factor 0.01-> 252 000, 
scale factor 0.001-> 253 000

Why does it become so big when I have big dimensions?
