The default 3D algorithm ("Delaunay") generates about 7 million 
tetrahedra per gigabyte of RAM on a 32 bit machine. Gmsh also integrates 
Netgen (choose the 3D "Frontal" algorithm), so you can compare both.

Yes. For very large 2D meshes also use the "Delaunay" 2D algorithm.
