[Gmsh] Adding control on mesh size

In order to have more control on mesh size and quality I need to add “dummy” lines and/or surfaces inside my volume. Can anybody remind me how to tell gmsh that these lines/surfaces belong to the volume, so that their 1D/2D mesh will then belong to the 3D volume mesh? Thank you.
