[Gmsh] .msh file format $Nodes section question

hey all,
I have a question regarding the $Nodes section in the .msh file format. The 
only information I could find is the following:

$Nodesnumber-of-nodesnode-number x-coord y-coord z-coord
…
$EndNodes



However, in some of my gmsh generated .msh files I have another column following the z-coord full of integer zeros. Does someone know why and what is the purpose? And how come I see them in some of my files, but not all?
