[Gmsh] ELEMENT SIZE

Hi everyone, 
I read online that there are three ways of controlling the element size in a mesh. The irst one is by changing the element size factor in tools>options>mesh>general. 
My question is: what exactly does the number i put there represent? For example, if i write 1 in that field, is one the size of the average element?
