[Gmsh] NASA almond

Hello,
When I am searching your web site I've seen "EMCC_almond" which is new to me. 
I've searched nasa almond on the web to understand what is it, but I was not able to get answer for my question. I've found a lot of paper about this geometry but no expalantion. I decided to ask you my questions if are able answer my question I will be very happy. 
Questions:
1-) What is nasa almond in real life, is this plane or something else? What Nasa almond geometry represents? 
2-) Some paper says it is a benchmark geometry, What is the meaning of 'Benchmark geometry'
