Ah the problem might then just come from the fact that in version 1.60 
we used the .geo parser to read .stl files. In new versions the STL 
reader is separate. So if you want to define additional entities you 
cannot simply add GEO definitions in the .stl file: you need to include 
the .stl file in a .geo file, and add the definitions there.

See "demos/sphere-discrete.geo" for an example.
