[Gmsh] something really trivial

Hello,

For some very strange reason, it has become impossible for me to select 
lines or surfaces to add as physical entities (groups)

I used to be able to select them (they become red) and with "e end, u 
undo last and 1 abort"

Now I jsut get the message "e end, q abort" and nothing can be selected. 
After pressing "e" nothing is wrtten to the .geo file.

I must have accidentally changed a setting but cannot figure out what. 
Can anyone advise?
