Ah, I think I get it: in version 2.4.* on Max 
/Applications/Gmsh.app/Contents/MacOS/Gmsh is actually a shell script 
that launches /Applications/Gmsh.app/Contents/Resources/bin/gmsh.

Can you try /Applications/Gmsh.app/Contents/Resources/bin/gmsh -listen & ?
