[Gmsh] Creating families and groups to be output in MED format

Dear GMSHers,

I am sorry. I am a bit confused.
When I read the GMSH manual, I get the feeling that I can only create groups
on geometrical entities, not from mesh.

Can I also create groups on a meshed structure?
(ie opening a nastran mesh for instance, selecting with the mouse some
elements and assign them in a new group?)

If so, how can I make sure that they are saved as a "Family" in MED format?
How may I choose to save this element set as "group" or as "family"?
