[Gmsh] Refine by splitting gives weird elements

Dear gmsh users,

I have a cylinder meshed in triangular prisms (cylinder.geo). I'd like 
to refine the mesh by splitting every prism in 8 smaller ones as shown here:

But instead of a uniform refinement, somehow I get these weird 
structures (y-view.jpg and z-view.jpg) and I just can't figure out why.



Any help is highly appreciated!
