[Gmsh] Question about Tags

Hello,
I am new to GMSH. I have a question about tags in GMSH and was wondering if someone can help me. Is there any way I can make GMSH generate extra tag? I know that there are usually two tags (physical and elementary tags), but I need to create one more extra tag for interpreting material types. Can GMSH create extra tags? I have been reading the manual and reviewed tutorials, but couldn't find answer to this question. Can you please help me with this?
