Can you elaborate this sentence?  "Put your background field on a 3 grid that covers your surface"

My background field is a 2-dimension field on the surface, how to put it on a 3 grid?

Put your background field on a 3 grid that covers your surface: Gmsh will happily interpolate the volume data on the non-planar surface.
