[Gmsh] Specifying the number of elements?

For structured grids (transfinite, extruded), you can specify the number 
of elements exactly by setting the number of vertices explicitly on the 
boundary.

For unstructured grids you can only specify the number of elements 
*approximately*, by using e.g. characteristic lengths at vertices, or a 
background mesh.
