[Gmsh] new plugin development

Hi All,
I just started using GMSH and I must say it is a really nice program.
I am not sure if this was asked before, but is it possible to develop new
plugins for GMSH for my needs.
For example, importing a text file with x and y locations to create a
geometry (with lots of points) within the program?
I am guessing the source code in the plugins directory will be useful
towards creating a new plugin.
