[Gmsh] .msh file format $Nodes section question

I figured this has to do with .msh version 3: 
$ MeshFormat
3 0 8

is there any documentation about that? It seems to be default one the 
commandline, even though stated experimental in the gui save menu. But 
couldn't find this anywhere documented...
